Hidden Histories Tour - Matthijs Maris: Art and Mental Health
Painter
Matthijs Maris was a unique and misunderstood character within the context of
nineteenth-century Dutch art. Maris painted with what he identified as an
instinctive feeling, striving to capture the phenomena of his mind, as
opposed to catering to the tastes and restrictions of the art market. His
commitment to capturing natural creative energy left him a social and
artistic outlier, reportedly resulting in a severe mental decline. Join art historian and volunteer Becca, as well as curator Pippa Stephenson-Sit for an in-gallery exploration of the complex mind of Matthijs Maris embodied by his art, how his contemporaries characterised him, and how we might better understand and appreciate him today. |
