"As with several of the Glasgow Boys artists, Arthur Melville made many trips to West Asia and North Africa from the early 1880s. It was an exciting time of pictorial experimentation and innovation inspired by exposure to different cultures, light and heat. However, he, Joseph Crawhall, John Lavery and William Kennedy were part of a privileged European elite that often didn’t understand or fully respect the culture, faith and politics of the countries to which they travelled.
