The Burrell Collection Celebrates 1 Million Visitors

The Burrell Collection has welcomed its 1 millionth visitor today (Tuesday 13 February), just under two years since re-opening following major refurbishment.

The A-listed home of The Burrell Collection in Pollok Country Park is a modern, green museum, displaying one of the finest personal collections of art ever assembled. More than half a million people visited the award-winning museum in the first nine months of opening, with over three-quarters of those travelling from outside the city, re-establishing its position as one of Glasgow’s great cultural institutions, and a key visitor attraction.

When the Burrell was originally opened in 1983, it marked the start of an ambitious transformation for the city, and a £1.4bn spend on cultural and sporting led regeneration. By harnessing the power of its incredible cultural draw, Glasgow has positioned itself as one of the world’s must-visit destinations. An accolade underscored by the recent Burrell visitor survey, with 88% of people stating, ‘visiting a Glasgow Museum was either very or quite an important factor in their decision to visit the city’.

The Burrell Collection reopened to huge acclaim in 2022, in 2023 it was awarded Art Fund Museum of the Year and 2024 is off to a great start as we welcome our 1 millionth visitor to this treasured, world-class museum. “As this milestone underlines, people are keen to enjoy this breath-taking collection. It has been wonderfully redisplayed and reinterpreted in a way that offers something for everyone, in the most stunning setting. “This winning combination is certain to bring people back, and others in for the first time, as we programme events and exhibitions that will attract local people and tourists in the year ahead. This success and the city’s ongoing commitment to culture continues to reap substantial wellbeing and economic rewards for Glasgow and beyond.
