The Burrell Collection wins Best Large Museum in Family Friendly Museum Award 2025

The Burrell Collection has won Best Large Museum in the Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum Award 2025, it was announced at an awards ceremony in London on Monday 13 October 2025.
Run by charity Kids in Museums, the national award celebrates museums, galleries, historic homes or heritage sites in the UK that go the extra mile to provide a great experience for families.
Launched in 2004, the Family Friendly Museum Award is widely recognised as a benchmark for excellence in the heritage sector. Each year Kids in Museums receives hundreds of public nominations, which are whittled down to a shortlist by an expert panel. The final say goes to families, who pay undercover visits to each shortlisted museum over the summer holidays to decide the winner.
Competing against two other museums in the Best Large Museum category, the Burrell clinched the win with family judges praising free entry, easy to understand labels, replica objects and interactive screens.
An armour and weapons session that allowed children to try on and handle replica artefacts was a big hit for many. Judges also highlighted how the plentiful seating, indoor picnic spaces, quiet areas, changing places toilets, and buggy parking made visits easy and comfortable.
Families were also impressed by the commitment to inclusivity, with trails about LGBTQ+ and colonial histories introducing these topics in a way that was accessible for all ages.

Walking into each gallery felt like opening up a new box of delights...It was abundantly clear so much thought and effort had gone into making the collection as accessible as possible to as many people as possible, and for that, they should be commended. One of the best museums we have ever visited.
Alison Bowyer, Executive Director of Kids in Museums, said:
“Congratulations to The Burrell Collection. Winning the Best Large Museum category is a tremendous achievement. It’s clear how much our undercover judges enjoyed visiting The Burrell Collection, with its excellent family activities, thoughtful facilities and family friendly café. As many museums continue to struggle with shrinking budgets it’s great to see such care and attention being paid to family audiences.”
